Visiting the Newport Transporter Bridge |
We are advised by Newport City Council that the Bridge is currently only open at weekends. See their website for further details
Although visitors cannot ride on the Bridge during the week, they can, of course, still visit to view the structure.
Email from a visitorJust had to say what a wonderful time we had visiting the bridge on your recent open day in the May Bank holiday. We drove up from Kent just to walk on the walkway and it was well worth the trip. Who needs the Sydney harbour bridge when this is in the UK ! We would certainly have paid more than double what we did to walk on the walkway. I`m sure many others would too.. if they only knew about it ! Hope the bridge goes on for another hundred years. With best wishes and thanks for a wonderful day out !! Greg Roberts, Kent Planning your visitBefore planning a visit to the Bridge, please check the operating hours of the Visitor Centre and the Bridge itself (see Links page), check our What's On page and contact us for further information. If you are planning a visit, please contact us well in advance. We can often arrange access to the motorhouse and high level walkway which are not normally open to the public How to find the Transporter BridgeFrom either Junction 24 or Junction 28 of the M4 take the A48. This is the new dual carriageway Southern Distributor Road which runs right past the Bridge. To go across the Bridge turn left (if coming from Jn 24) or right (from Jn 28) at the traffic lights. Except during Open Days parking is normally easy in Stephenson Street on the East (far) side of the river or there is a car park just off the A48 (follow the yellow signs). Disabled parking is available adjacent to the Bridge and Visitor Centre, which has a disabled-friendly toilet. Parking is free at all these locations. To regain the M4 after crossing to the East side, carry on along Stephenson Street and turn left at the end into Corporation Road. This leads to the A48 Southern Distributor Road from which the M4 is signposted. The nearest bus service is Newport Transport No 40 from the bus station to St Stephen's Church, about a quarter of a mile from the Bridge. ChargesCrossing on the Gondola is 50p for a car but otherwise free. Entry to the Visitor Centre is free. A charge is made to walk across the high level walkway on Open Days when it is open to the public. MapZoom in for a closer look and click on Aerial to see an aerial photograph. Note that the parts of the A4042 and A455 shown on this map are now the A48 and the B4237 has been rerouted away from the Transporter Bridge |
